Bounce houses can turn any boring backyard into a party every day! And besides being super fun, bouncing is a great exercise for kids because it combines strength, coordination, flexibility, and gross motor skills.

There is a wide variety of inflatable bounce houses on the market, including options for indoor and outdoor use, along with various sizes and shapes built to engage children of all ages. Many bounce houses even include water features for hot summer days.

To select the best bounce houses for kids, we spoke to a pediatric physical therapist and a developmental interventionist. We also researched safety concerns and considered durability, size, cost, and recommended age. Our list includes picks for all age groups and interests, from bounce houses with water slides and obstacle courses to smaller indoor options.

Safety Tips

While bouncing is inherently a healthy activity for children, there are some safety considerations to take into account. According to Katie Sealer, a Colorado-based developmental interventionist, it’s important to ensure your kiddo has enough core strength to adequately support their body while bouncing. She also suggests that parents group similarly aged children together so that bigger kids don’t accidentally harm younger children. The number of children playing on the bounce house at a time should also be limited to avoid collisions and accidents.

Remember that bounce houses should be placed on a flat surface and secured to the ground. Children should remove shoes, glasses, and loose objects before entering the bounce house, and an adult should supervise kids and enforce safety precautions at all times.

Lindsay Bognar, a neuro physical therapist who often works with spinal cord injuries, also recommends that children avoid inverted maneuvers like flips and horseplay.

Little Tikes Jump 'n Slide Bouncer

Amazon Little Tikes Jump 'n Slide Inflatable Bouncer

Amazon

Pros
  • GFCI outlet for blower

  • Quick inflation time

  • Includes shoe storage on the side

Cons
  • Blower is very loud for indoor use

The Little Tikes Jump ‘n Slide Inflatable Bouncer takes the top spot due to its versatility. Its generous size (84 x 84 inches) means it can easily accommodate kids ranging in age from 3 to 8 years old, with a maximum of three kids inside at any time.

A generous slide runs the length of one side, acting as a fun ramp for kids to exit or enter the bounce house. While the Jump ‘n Slide doesn’t come with any water features, creative parents can place a small inflatable pool at the bottom of the slide for even more fun on hot days.

The bouncer has mesh walls to keep kids inside and a GFCI outlet, a modern outlet that prevents electrical shock. It also comes with its own storage bag and bouncer stakes to secure the corners.

Setup is quick, with most parents saying it took them less than one minute to fully inflate. While the Jump ‘n Slide can technically be used indoors or outdoors, the heavy-duty constant blower is quite noisy when confined indoors.

Intex Jump-O-Lene Castle Bouncer

Amazon Intex Jump-O-Lene Castle Bouncer

Amazon

Pros
  • Lightweight

  • Fun design for young kids

  • Very affordable

Cons
  • Lower weight limit

  • Does not include air pump

Perfect for basements or larger living rooms, the Intex Jump ‘o Lene Castle is colorfully designed to inspire imagination in our youngest children. While smaller than other bounce houses on this list, the product dimensions (69 x 69 inches) are large enough for an indoor playroom. This smaller size also makes the Jump ‘o Lene significantly lighter than other inflatables, clocking in at a mere 13 pounds.

The lightweight construction does mean there’s a downside: The Intex bounce house can only hold two children with a total combined weight of 120 pounds, making it great for a family but less usable for special events like parties or play dates. (Intex notes that each child should weigh no more than 59 pounds.)

The bounce house is very affordable, but keep in mind that the air pump is not included. You must purchase it separately or use one for standard air mattresses. In addition, this bounce house doesn’t have stakes or a way to secure it to the ground, so it’s not recommended for outdoor use.

Amazon Blast Zone Magic Castle Bounce House

Pros
  • Includes DVD for setup walk-through

  • Generous weight limit

  • Durable materials

Cons
  • Small slide

Your toddler will love this colorful castle designed by Blast Zone. The Magic Castle boasts stately turrets on all four corners, separated by mesh walls to keep your kiddos inside. Even though the bounce house is quite large (132 x 102 inches), it can inflate within 60 seconds (but if it’s your first time using it, we recommend watching the included DVD for setup instructions).

Not only is the Magic Castle large, but it’s also constructed with durable materials such as commercial-grade impact surfaces, double stitching, and reinforced ridges for added longevity. While these additions make the bounce house heavy, they also create a pretty generous weight limit of 300 pounds. Blast Zone recommends no more than three kids inside at any time.

In addition to the included ultralight blower, the Magic Castle comes with a small slide. It’s roughly 2 feet long, so it’s not the most engaging for older children, but toddlers will still enjoy the fun escape.

SMOL Blue Bouncy House

Pottery Barn Kids SMOL Blue Bouncy House

Pottery Barn Kids

Pros
  • Chic design

  • Free of phthalates and paraffin

  • Can also be used outside

Cons
  • Pricier option

Most bounce houses are brightly colored, looking more like circus tents than living room showpieces. Not so with the SMOL Blue Bouncy House. Created by two moms, this indoor bounce house boasts a posh design with muted colors that look surprisingly decent in any home.

Of course, aesthetics are just one factor. The SMOL Bounce House can accommodate three kids and a maximum weight of 180 pounds, so it’s a great option for indoor play dates. Plus, it conveniently packs up into the included storage bag so parents can tote it along to birthday parties or other social events, too.

Unlike other bounce houses constructed with vinyl or straight polyester, the SMOL house uses an Oxford polyester blend, a type of polyester-and-cotton mixture. This makes the bounce house softer to the touch. Of course, the nicer materials come with a price premium, but at least the SMOL bounce house includes a blower.

Bounceland Jump and Splash Adventure Bounce House

Amazon Bounceland Jump and Splash Adventure Bounce House

Amazon

Pros
  • Generous slide for younger children

  • Hefty maximum weight

  • Includes inflatable basketball hoop

Cons
  • Small bounce area

For parents with younger kiddos who want it all, consider the Bounceland Jump n’ Splash. This trifecta of fun includes a 6.5-foot slide, a small bouncing area, and even a splash pool at the bottom for kids (and dogs!) to enjoy on sunny days. The slide can be used with or without water, but there is a tradeoff: The splash pool is small for bigger kids. If you have a child over 5 or 6, they may slide right out.

As with other bounce houses, inflation takes less than one minute with the included blower. As a bonus, the Bounceland comes with an extra-long fill tube that keeps the blower a decent distance from the bounce house.

With a maximum weight of 300 pounds, it’s on the sturdier side and can accommodate up to three children. When combined with the hook-and-loop closures on the mesh doors, the Bounceland is designed to keep kiddos from falling out of the bouncy.

Yard Bounce House with Inflatable Slide

Amazon Yard Bounce House with Inflatable Slide

Amazon

Pros
  • Commercial-grade sewing for durability

  • Decent weight limit

Cons
  • Heavy for its size

Parents with toddlers will appreciate the durability and stability of the Yard Bounce House. Not only does it include a blower, but the bounce house itself is constructed with commercial-grade sewing and buffer strips so you never have to worry about popped or separated tubes.

Despite the 250-pound weight limit, it’s on the smaller side for platform space. Yard recommends only two to three children with an age cap of 8 years old play on the bounce house at a time, but we think this makes a better bounce house for toddlers and young preschoolers.

While the bounce house doesn’t have many bells and whistles, it does include protective mesh walls and a small slide for kiddos to enjoy.

No muss, no fuss, and a whole lot of bounce. That’s the secret behind the Blast Zone Big ‘Ol Bouncer, a no-thrill bounce house with ample space to jump around. With a maximum weight limit of 600 pounds, the Big ‘Ol Bouncer can easily fit up to six kids and can accommodate older children. That’s a rarity with bouncers since they are often designed for small kids, so the Big ‘Ol Bouncer is a solid bet for those big kids in your life.

It comes with a flow-through blower, and inflation time is less than two minutes. While there aren’t a lot of extra features on this bounce house, it does come with a small slide. Pros
  • Ball pit separate from bouncing platform

  • Generous individual weight limit

  • 40 balls are included

Cons
  • Smaller size

If there’s anything more fun than a bounce house, it’s a bounce house with a ball pit. While many families opt to throw a bunch of balls onto the bouncing platform, that’s not the safest option, as kiddos can slip on the rolling objects. But with the Step4Fun Inflatable Bounce House, you get an entirely separate ball pit designed to entertain your children for hours. Bonus: 40 balls are included with the kit (but you can always add more by buying an extra pack ofsoft plastic balls).

The Step4Fun is on the shorter side, with a wall height of 65 inches. This means it is a good option for toddlers and younger children but less ideal for bigger kids. Still, the maximum weight limit of 250 pounds is generous. And, if you have a solo kiddo, they can still bounce as they grow with the 100-pound individual weight limit.

Pros
  • Fun graphics

  • Extra-wide slide

Cons
  • May be too fragile for older children

It’s a bounce house fit for royalty. The Action Air Inflatable Castle boasts fun imagery around the outer wall, including colorful graphics of unicorns, rainbows, and castles. The fun continues on the inside, where kids enjoy the built-in basketball hoop. You’ll also see a hook-and-loop dart board designed for tennis balls on one of the outside walls.

Three of the walls are lined with mesh, but the fourth is wide open as it leads to a large slide that runs the length of the bounce house. When combined with the decent jumping area, this Action Air Castle adequately fits up to three children.

The bounce house comes with a 450w blower, and inflation takes up to three minutes. Banzai Pipeline Inflatable Water Park

Amazon Banzai Pipeline Inflatable Water Park

Amazon

Pros
  • Large slide for older children

  • Generous pool is fun on hot days

Cons
  • Must keep blower running to keep pool filled

Once you bring home the Banzai Pipeline Inflatable Water Park, the party is at your house. This extra-large inflatable water park is filled with fun features, including a climbing wall, a 96-inch slide, and a large splash pool to cool off in the sun. Since the dimensions are larger than many other bounce houses, the Banzai Water Park is a good choice for older kids who still want to play.

This bounce house does come with a constant-flow blower for easy inflation, but it’s important to note that you must keep it running for the pool to stay filled. If your kids come inside for lunch and you shut off the blower, the pool walls collapse and the water leaks out.

Still, finding a bounce house built to accommodate older kids is a rarity. While the 150-pound weight capacity isn’t very big, it’s mainly referencing the top of the slide. If you exceed that capacity at the top of the slide, the whole structure can tip over. Pro tip: Encourage your children to tackle the slide one at a time.

How We Selected the Best Bounce Houses

To select the best bounce houses for kids, we began our research by interviewing two child development and physical therapy experts: Lindsay Bognar, PT, DPT, a former neuro pediatric physical therapist atPrimary Children’s Hospitalin Utah, and Katie Sealer, a Colorado-based developmental interventionist. Their expert perspective allowed us to better understand the benefits of bouncing for kids and how to do so safely. In addition, we researched safety guidelines and recommendations for bounce houses.

With these expert insights in mind, we researched dozens of bounce houses available on the market. We compared their cost, features, size, age recommendations, and safety components to ensure they met our standards.

What to Look for in a Bounce House

Cost

More often than not, bounce houses are an investment. While some of the smaller, basic bounce houses will come in under $100, like our best budget pick, theIntex Jump ‘o Lene Castle(65美元),远common for price points to begin at $200.

如果你想要特殊的特性,比如一个水上公园,slide, or ball pit, you can expect the price to creep up to $400-$500—or beyond. The most expensive bounce houses on our list are theSMOL Blue Bouncy House($539), which is small but beautifully designed, theBlast Zone Pirate Bay Water Park($600), and theBounceland Bounce House Obstacle Pro-Racer($599), both massive inflatable structures that are party-ready and guaranteed to provide hours of fun.

Be sure to read the fine print for added extras. While most bounce houses include a blower with purchase, some do not, and that can be a costly addition.

Recommended Age

"Bouncing is wonderful for child development for strengthening bones and muscles, improving gross motor skills, improving flexibility, and improving quality of sleep because it can wear them out—which is good for everyone," says Bognar. However, you want to ensure that your child has adequate neck and core strength.

Be sure to check the manufacturer's recommendations on the appropriate ages for each specific bounce house. A study published in the Journal of Children's Orthopaedics suggests that bounce house usage should be limited to children over 6 years old. The study also emphasizes that the main risk factors for injuries in bounce houses are "lack of effective adult supervision and the shared use by an excessive number of participants of different ages and weights."

Safety

Just because bounce houses are inflatable and made of soft materials doesn't mean it's safe to let children play unsupervised. Tens of thousands of injuries occur every year in bounce houses, including fractures, muscle strains, and bruises.According to Bognar, it's imperative that parents do not exceed the suggested maximum number of children. "I would even suggest less than the recommended number for younger children or kids with decreased balance or physical limitations," she says.

Bognar also recommends reading the instructions to ensure it's properly set up while also staying vigilant about inspections. Bounce houses should be secured to the ground using stakes or sandbags. They should be placed on a flat surface, away from trees and electrical lines. Most importantly, adults should supervise children at all times, make sure all safety guidelines are followed, and that children refrain from doing flips, somersaults, and other dangerous tricks.

It's also a good idea to ensure your kid is old enough to express his needs or desires. "Make sure the children can say, 'No' or 'Stop,'" suggests Sealer. She also recommends that parents keep children of similar ages inside so that older kids don't accidentally cause harm to younger children.

Size and Capacity

Bounce houses come in a variety of sizes designed to accommodate children of different ages. Smaller bounce houses often have shorter walls (less than 5 feet) and are intended for younger kids. Conversely, larger bounce houses with bigger jumping surfaces and higher walls (higher than 6 feet) are typically designed for preschoolers and older children.

It’s also important to look at weight capacity. All brands will list a maximum weight which is the most weight the bounce house can support at one time (including all children). Smaller bounce houses will likely have maximum capacities of around 200-250 pounds, while larger houses may have capacities exceeding 400 pounds.

最后,一定要看建议的能力for the number of children. Most bounce houses can hold between two and four children. While it may seem like no big deal to increase those numbers for the sake of fun, they exist for the safety of your kids.

Durability

Most bounce houses are constructed with synthetic materials such as PVC, nylon, or polyester. While these materials are durable enough to withstand bouncing and playing, it’s still a good idea to avoid pitching the bounce house on a rough surface such as rocks.

Stitching is also a factor for durability. Since bounce houses are inflated, there is a possibility that inner tubes will pop when kids are bouncing, potentially causing harm. For that reason, look for bounce houses that advertise double or quadruple stitching. This basically means the seams have been reinforced and are that much stronger.

Indoor or Outdoor Use

Most dry bounce houses (without any water) can be used inside or outside as long as you have a level, stable surface. However, many of the taller bounce houses won’t fit inside, so be sure to measure before dragging everything indoors.

另一个因素要考虑室内stability of the bounce house. Most bounce houses come with stakes to pin down the corners to prevent the structure from flying away. Since you cannot do that inside, be sure to anchor it down with something heavy like sandbags.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are bounce houses worth it?

The average rental price for a bounce house in the United States ranges from $200-$600 for a full day, so a one-day rental is often equal to the cost of your own bounce house.

To determine whether it’s worth it for your family, consider how often you’ll want to use it and how many kids you want playing in it at the same time. Rental bounce houses are usually larger and will work for parties with many kids, while bounce houses for your home are usually limited to just a few kids.

  • What is the best age for a bounce house?

“Bouncing can be great for all ages!” says Bognar. However, younger children have a greater risk of injury, so some studies suggest that bounce houses should be limited to children over 6 years old.

Younger children may be able to use bounce houses as long as safety precautions are observed, such as close adult supervision, a limited number of kids on the bounce house at a time, and no horseplay, flips, or risky tricks are allowed.

  • What is the most durable material for a bounce house?

Most bounce houses are made from polyester, nylon, or PVC, with nylon and polyester being the strongest. Polyester tends to resist stretching, wear, and tear better, while nylon has low moisture absorbency, making it a great choice for water features.

  • How do you clean a bounce house?

First, read the instruction manual to ensure your bounce house doesn’t come with its own specific set of instructions. Then, remove all large debris like dirt clumps or sticks with your hands before sweeping out the bounce house (if you have a shop vacuum, that works really well, too).

If there are still dirty sections requiring a wet clean, whip up a mixture that includes three parts water, one part vinegar, and a little splash of bleach-free dish soap. Scrub the dirty areas with a rag before rinsing them out with a hose. If you are worried about germs and want to do further disinfecting, purchase some bleach-free disinfectant wipes and use those to wipe down the bounce house.
