Most babies are ready to begin eating solid foods as a complement to breastmilk or formula at around 6 months of age, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP),so you'll need to have a high-quality high chair at the ready. A high chair isn't just a spot for babies to enjoy snacks and meals for a few months—many grow with your child through several conversions into toddlerhood and beyond. For the adults, a high chair that's easy to clean is a priority, but you should also consider safety, readiness for solid foods, age, weight recommendations, longevity, durability, and cost to find the best high chair for your baby and your family's needs.
To find the best high chairs, we researched safety guidelines issued by the AAP,the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).We also spoke to parents and medical professionals, including Benjamin Hoffman, MD, AAP president-elect and nationally recognized child injury prevention and education expert. A pediatrician from ourReview Boardreviewed the contents of this article for accuracy and safety related to readiness and proper use. With this guidance in mind, we researched dozens of top-rated high chairs in the market and considered their design, safety features, and value. We then narrowed our list to 32 high chairs, which we put through multiple tests at theVerywell Testing Labin New York City.
During our test, we didn't just look at the high chairs—we got down and dirty by throwing tomato sauce, avocado, puffs, and more baby foods on them to recreate the kind of harsh treatment the high chairs might receive in a home environment. Our team of experienced parenting editors put all the chairs together and evaluated how easy they were to assemble. Then, we used 25-pound sandbags to replicate the weight of an average 15-month-old boyand moved the chairs around as we would at home while assessing safety features and sturdiness. We also got them dirty using baby food and cleaned them following manufacturer instructions. After thorough testing, we selected the 12 best high chairs and sent them out with our editors, who continue to use them to determine their durability and quality in the real world. To ensure we're recommending the best high chairs for families, we continue to update this list as our editors (with the help of their kiddos) provide feedback.

Ergobaby Evolve High Chair Set
Easy to clean
三个转换
Foldable
Lots of zip ties to cut during assembly
Ergobaby发展突出的印象深刻design that grows with your child through three conversions—a high chair, regular chair, and kitchen helper (similar to a stepstool). We love how kiddos can use this high chair at 6 months old (or when they can sit upright unassisted) and use it into middle childhood and beyond. A 200-pound weight limit for the kitchen helper and a 100-pound weight limit for the regular chair ensures longevity. With multiple transformations, however, come many pieces to assemble. It took us approximately 20 minutes to unbox everything and cut off the (many) zip ties, making it the most challenging part of the assembly process. From there, constructing the high chair was uncomplicated—parts clicked into each other seamlessly and the four bolts it needed didn't require any tools. Everything came together in just 30 minutes, although we noticed a slight wiggle in the overall design, which came as a surprise with the solid wood material.
To say we love this high chair’s design would be an understatement. A low profile ensures children can sit at the dinner table with or without the tray, while its folding capability saves space when not in use. The combination of the off-white or black plastic with the wooden frame makes it stand out as a beautiful and stylish piece of furniture. In addition, it features a removable footrest that’s a breeze to take off (just press two buttons) and adjust to two different heights, so kids can continue using the chair as they grow. Plus, the footrest doubles as a step when used in kitchen helper mode.
A five-point safety harness easily adjusts and doesn’t require rethreading, keeping children safe during mealtimes. Despite the Ergobaby Evolve High Chair lacking wheels, it’s light enough to lift without needing to roll it. In addition, the seat lifts out via two buttons while the tray insert slides out for cleaning and conversion purposes. Speaking of cleaning, after slapping various foods, like avocado and puffs, onto the high chair’s tray and seat, it only took us eight minutes to clean everything up. The main surfaces of the chair, dishwasher-safe tray insert, legs, and footrest can be wiped clean. The only issue we encountered with the Evolve was cleaning the straps—we ended up using a sponge to clean food off.
虽然这是一个更昂贵的高椅子s we tested, you’re getting a lot more than a high chair: With three conversions, this high chair grows with your child, so you’re investing in a solid piece of baby gear you’ll use for years. The kitchen helper conversion requires a separate purchase (an additional $50), but it’s 100 percent worth it.

Stokke Clikk High Chair
Fast, easy assembly
Sleek design in lots of colors
Cleaning is a breeze
Sleek legs create large footprint
The Stokke Clikk will surprise you with its basic yet versatile design. It converts from a high chair to a regular chair with orwithout a harness, so kids can use it from 6 months until they’re 3 years old or reach a maximum weight of 33 pounds. From the time we started opening the box to finishing the tool-free assembly, it only took us six minutes, unlike the near-hour it took to assemble the high chair’s counterpart, the Stokke Tripp Trapp. All pieces on the Clikk “click” into place, like the detachable tray, legs, footrest, and seat, and make a noise to let you know it’s secure. The easy-to-understand instructions were helpful, but we actually didn’t need them.
The sleek, minimalistic design fits any home decor thanks to its chic wooden legs and ergonomic seat available in seven colors, like fjord blue, sunny coral, or cloud gray. The high chair is also certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), meaning it undergoes testing to ensure it meets federal safety standards. While the legs stick out and create a larger footprint, they also provide incredible stability to the overall design. We appreciate the five-point harness that keeps children safe during mealtimes without posing a problem when putting children into the seat. However, removing them was challenging. As for comfort, a footrest adjusts to two positions for tiny feet, and there’s an optionalmachine-washable cushionfor extra support (sold separately).
仅用了不到五分钟的时间彻底抹去the high chair down (with paper towels only) after coating it in sweet potato, avocado, puffs, and tomato sauce. The wooden legs show the most mess, so you’ll want to scrub them diligently (we used a sponge). We even threw the removable tray into the lab’s dishwasher, which came out spick and span. The only spot of cleaning concern is the footrest, but it’s removable, so you can reach any crevices where food may get trapped. Still, we’ll take a little extra cleaning of the footrest in exchange for the removable and machine-washable five-point harness. Our thorough cleaning did lead to some scratches on the seat.
At $179, the Stokke Clikk is worth the ease of assembly alone. Not only do all parts attach seamlessly, but they detach beautifully to fit into theClikk travel bag(sold separately) for picnics at the park or dinner at grandma and grandpa’s house. We’d happily pay the current price tag or more for the practical and easy-to-clean design.

Stokke Steps High Chair
Optional bouncer clips onto high chair
High weight capacity
Solid and stable construction
Low profile possibly inconvenient for tall caregivers
Bouncer is sold separately
The Stokke Steps high chair features a versatile seating system that grows with your child, transforming from theStokke bouncer(sold separately) to a functional high chair or regular toddler chair. The seat of the Stokke bouncer removes to clip onto the Steps high chair, allowing your baby to be at a comfortable height. Once babies sit up unassisted, they can use the high chair until they're ready for the standard chair, which has a 187-pound weight limit to increase longevity (and save you money in the long run). There are three color options with varying shades in the wooden legs and ergonomic seat, and all materials have a JPMA certification for safety.
同时公司拥有tool-free组装德西gn, we needed an Allen wrench to tighten the bolts. Otherwise, the illustration-only instructions are accurate for each step, and putting the high chair together isn't difficult. A solid construction was our reward after 28 minutes of assembly. We loved the chair's low profile but thought it might inconvenience taller parents and caregivers. Additionally, the entire seat can be removed, instantly becoming a regular chair. We missed having a tray for the times you want to feed a child away from the table—the Stokke Steps has a tray, but only if you purchase the complete set (including a seat cushion) for an additional $100.
The straps of the five-point safety harness hook into the waist buckle, so there are only three parts to clip together to secure children. On the other hand, there's no option to rethread the straps, which may be a problem for taller children. The adjustable backrest and footrest for added comfort are nice features, though. As for cleaning, it took us exactly 9 minutes and 45 seconds to wipe down the wood and plastic after slathering on sweet potato, avocado, and more. Of course, the trickiest part was the straps, but that was the case with all the high chairs we tested.
The Stokke Steps is one of the more expensive high chairs we tested, but it's made by a trustworthy brand that's been around for over 50 years. While it is an investment, you'll reap the benefits for years and with multiple children.

Traditional look isn’t for everyone
Six conversions are possible with the Graco Made2Grow High Chair. The versatile design allows you to convert from an infant high chair to a full-size high chair, infant andtoddler booster seat, and youth stool. The sixth conversion seats two kids simultaneously—an older child in the youth stool and a younger child in the infant booster seat. Assembling the high chair took us 10 minutes from start to finish, and it was easy and intuitive just by looking at the photos in the instructions (but there are also descriptions with each image if you get stuck). The best part? We didn’t need any tools for assembly.
The Graco Made2Grow almost reminds us of the 90s with its traditional yet trendy design that efficiently gets the job done. Securing the safety harness initially confused us, but we managed once we figured out where to buckle the pieces. The harness clips make a noise when connected to the buckle, so you can clearly tell when your baby is secure in the chair. The machine-washable seat pad with infant support and a three-position recline provides extra comfort for tiny tushes and easy cleaning for the adults. While its large footprint isn’t ideal for leaving out in small spaces, its folding capability makes up for it. Simply fold in the legs for compact storage between meals to regain space. Wheels on the front of the high chair make it easy to pull your baby closer to you while feeding. However, we felt some resistance when pushing the high chair backward due to the lack of wheels on the back legs. Still, the high chair’s design as a whole is secure and sturdy.
Due to the seat’s larger size, we spent most of our clean-up time cleaning the seat. However, the seat pad is machine washable if you need an extra hand with those tough stains. Thanks to its dishwasher-safe capability, the removable tray is easy to put on, take off, and clean. With its large size, though, it takes up a lot of real estate in the dishwasher and doesn’t leave much room for anything else. We washed the tray in the lab’s sink, which was a breeze and left us with space in the dishwasher for other items. After wiping the high chair down and cleaning hard-to-reach places, like the leg divider, we thought the chair looked like new.
Graco is a well-known baby brand quickly approaching its centennial anniversary, so you don’t have to worry about quality. The price tag makes it a budget-friendly high chair that will pay for itself ten times over with all its conversions. Despite lacking a modern style, it has many benefits, like easy assembly and fantastic functionality.

Best Swiveling
Munchkin 360 Cloud High Chair
Seat swivels 360 degrees
Modern design
Removable and machine-washable seat cushion
Straps difficult to put on child
非-removable footrest challenging to clean
The Munchkin 360 Cloud is like a glimpse into the future with its unique acrylic seat that swivels 360 degrees. The company says the high chair assembles in just one minute without using tools—and they’re right. We assembled the high chair in one minute and 22 seconds without tools. Three steps are all it takes to put the 360 Cloud together, and the entire process is easy and intuitive. Simply attach the legs to the frame, pop the seat into place, and click the tray in. The result? A stylish high chair that fits in with any decor thanks to its neutral design. We love the look of the floating seat and the swiveling feature that allows you to turn your child in any direction for easy feeding. While there are no conversion options, the high chair is safe to use from 6 months up to 3 years old, or 33 pounds.
Despite the wide base, the legs create plenty of stability and sturdiness. However, we noticed a little give from the mount that attaches the seat to its legs. Otherwise, the overall design feels solid. We never felt like the high chair would break or tip over. A five-point safety harness with adjustable straps and a removable cushion keeps littles safe during mealtimes without sacrificing comfort. We did encounter a downside to the straps: They’re attached to the seat at the chair’s base, so you have to lift the straps up and over your baby’s shoulders (an extra step, but not a dealbreaker).
This high chair also handles food clean-up beautifully. Both the trayand tray insert can be removed for easy cleaning in the sink or dishwasher, while the removable seat cushion is safe to throw in the washing machine for more demanding stains. In the lab, we cleaned the high chair in under eight minutes without any issues, thanks to the clear plastic seat. We did find it a bit challenging to clean the footrest, though. Since it can’t be removed, food got stuck on the bumpy surface and we had to scrub it at an awkward angle. The seat cover came out spotless from the washing machine, but the narrow openings for the straps didn’t make it easy to remove them.
Given its sturdiness, unique modern design, and ease of cleaning, the Munchkin 360 Cloud High Chair is well-priced at $200. Despite the lack of conversions, your kiddo can use this durable high chair for a long time and then pass it on to a younger sibling.

Nuna ZAAZ High Chair
Small footprint
220–pound weight limit
Height is adjustable
Hard-to-reach crevices for cleaning
Tray takes up lots of space in dishwasher
小空间的紧凑尺寸不相匹配the Nuna Zaaz. With dimensions of 24.5 x 19 x 34.5 inches, the high chair takes up little space at the table or in storage. Thanks to the modest design, assembling the high chair was fairly easy, with only five pieces to put together. No tools were necessary to complete assembly, but placing the footrest took extra strength. We love the innovative construction of the high chair, which turns into a regular chair with a 220-pound weight limit by removing the food tray. For additional longevity, a hidden gliding lift mechanism adjusts the chair's height up or down several inches to grow with children and make them feel part of the dinner table crowd.
While we love the Nuna high chair's modern look, its sturdiness is what won us over. We put the 25-pound sandbag in the seat and the high chair didn't move much. It also doesn't slide back and forth easily without force, so we feel confident in its stability. Moreover, the three- or five-point safety harness fastens securely around sandbags (and children) for safe eating. Although the straps were a hiccup for most high chairs, whether adjusting or cleaning, the Zaaz's straps feature an automatic locking magnetic buckle for a stress-free connection. A smooth air foam cushion (available in four colors) fits each chair for additional comfort. Plus, the removable tray allows kids to eat at the table safely with or without the detachable arm bar.
Once mealtime is over, simply remove the spacious tray, arm bar, harness, and footrest, and throw them allinto the dishwasher for quick cleaning. Even the high chair's seat can be removed with a special (and included) key for thorough cleaning. Our only complaint is that it has some hard-to-reach crevices. We found it difficult to clean food from the thin crevice that runs down the entire chair and where the harness straps connect to the seat. After cleaning it, the chair didn't look brand new, but it was in a good enough condition that we'd feel comfortable leaving it out in front of company.
The Nuna Zaaz carries a steep cost, but it's more than a high chair—even teens and adults can use it thanks to its generous weight limit. Plus, all detachable pieces are dishwasher-safe.

Graco Table2Table Premier Fold 7 in 1 Convertible High Chair
Foldable
Seven conversions
Took three minutes to clean
Rethread straps to adjust height
Could be sturdier
Like the Graco Made2Grow, the Table2Table features six conversions plus one more. This high chair transforms from a traditional setup (with three recline options) to an infant and toddler booster and toddler chair, or you can use two seats simultaneously, like the toddler chair and infant booster seat, to accommodate two children. The conversion that sets the Table2Table apart is the toddler chair with a toddler-sized table. That’s right—the high chair tray doubles as a tabletop when you take off the detachable meal insert. In addition, the high chair’s seat turns into a toddler chair with adjustable height positions for children to sit comfortably.
With so many conversions to choose from, the easy assembly of the high chair was a breath of fresh air. Pieces snap in intuitively (minus a plastic tab we had to bend), and the entire assembly process took us 10 minutes from start to finish. One standout about the design that we don’t like is the slight wobble when you shake the high chair. But, at the same time, we’re not worried about the high chair falling apart.
The Graco Table2Table features machine-washable fabric and infant support on the seat pad for comfort and easy cleaning. It also has five height adjustments for the chair and three height positions for the removable footrest. While we’re not fans of how much fabric encases the chair, the material camouflages stains well. What we do love is the wheels in the front of the high chair that make pulling your child closer to you much easier. The overall footprint of the Table2Table is large because the legs reach so far back, but the folding feature for compact storage outshines that hiccup. The Graco high chair has a three- and five-point safety harness to keep children safe. However, we don’t like that you must rethread the straps to adjust the height.
Despite the high chair looking as if it went through a small food fight during testing, the chair and tray looked brand new after a quick wipe-down. The tray features two units—the top insert doubles as a large plate, while the tray underneath is smooth for table conversion. The top insert removes easily for cleaning in the sink or dishwasher. Moreover, the seat pad’s fabric cleans up well with a dry paper towel, but it’s machine washable for when you want or need a deeper cleaning. We did find one small challenge when cleaning this chair: A crevice in one of the corners hid milk until we loosened the seat cover and found liquid running down the frame. We recommend checking all areas, including behind the seat cover, for any leftovers to prevent odors and mold. Otherwise, we finished cleaning the high chair in 3 minutes.
Considering that the Graco Table2Table High Chair turns into a toddler chair and table (plus six more conversions), the $200 price tag is quite reasonable. You’re technically purchasing a high chair that doubles as small furniture your child will use for years or through two kiddos.

Confusing assembly instructions
The Maxi-Cosi Moa High Chair features the most conversions with eight functional transformations. Children 6 months up to 5 years old, or 50 pounds, can use this as a standard infant high chair, toddler high chair, low stool, booster seat, feeding booster, a desk with a stool or chair, and a low-profile child chair with a tray. In addition to multiple conversions, the Maxi-Cosi Moa is lightweight at just 13.3 pounds, so you can move it around your home without breaking a sweat. While we love the no-tool assembly, the picture instructions are confusing and need better detailing. Still, we assembled the high chair in five and a half minutes and didn’t need an extra hand.
Available in three color options—blush, graphite, and blue—this high chair’s design proves style and functionality can live in harmony. The high chair’s seat detaches from its frame to act as a booster seat on a standard chair at the dining room table. We appreciate how sturdy the high chair feels and don’t mind giving up a little extra space to accommodate the frame’s wider base. Anti-slip rubber feet on the booster seat prevent slipping or sliding on a regular chair. Plus, the entire high chair feels even more secure with a child (or 25-pound sandbag) in it.
There’s a machine-washable five-point harness for extra security on wiggly bodies and easy cleaning. Kiddos will feel like adults at the table thanks to the height-adjustable booster seat with a bonus three-level adjustable footrest. We love how easy the dishwasher-safe tray is to remove for putting a child in easier, eating at the table, and cleaning. After mushing all kinds of food onto the high chair’s seat and frame, we were impressed with how the water-repellent seat pad came out pristine from the washing machine. However, we did find food under several areas of the seat pad, so you’ll want to check under the seat often.
Eight conversions and years of use for $180 is a great value. The overall design functions well for any conversion you need, and the high chair cleans up easily thanks to dishwasher-safe and machine-washable pieces.

Peg Perego Siesta High Chair
Multiple adjustable features
Folds compactly
No hard-to-reach places for cleaning
$100 more for specific color/pattern options
The Peg Perego Siesta is impressive if you’re looking for a foldable high chair. It reaps a compact size of 23.75 x 12.5 x 35 inches in its folded, stand-alone state for easy portability or storage. What’s more impressive is the 45 seconds it took us to assemble the high chair. All pieces arrived fully assembled, minus the tray and two scratch-resistant wheels we popped into place. We love how the four wheels move only when you press two buttons on the side and automatically lock in place when you no longer need to move it. We tried to knock the Peg Perego high chair down several times to no avail, resulting in the chair sliding instead tipping over.
While there are no conversions with this high chair, children will be w(h)ining and dining at their comfort level. Children can eat or relax in the chair between a three-position adjustable footrest, nine height positions, five recline options, and an extendable seat. You’ll hear a click at every adjustment point to let you know it’s locked into place. More importantly, a five-point safety harness secures little ones from birth up to 45 pounds.
After 11 minutes of cleaning up avocado, tomato sauce, and other kid-favorite foods, we were impressed that the compact high chair looked brand new. There are no hard-to-reach places where extra food can accumulate or mold can grow, and the removable tray insert is safe to toss in the dishwasher. In addition, the eco-leather stain-resistant upholstery feels plush and can be removed for easier cleaning, although it’s not machine-washable (wipe with a damp cloth). Still, the end result was worth it for how many places we had to clean. And a bonus: A storage net on the back of the seat holds baby essentials, like teethers, toys, and more.
The design of the Peg Perego Siesta is next-level—the price, not so much. There are 11 different color and pattern combinations; however, specific styles cost an additional $100. For example, the ambiance brown comes in at $429 and features a faux wood frame, while options with solid seat colors and a white frame are $329.

Ingenuity Beanstalk High Chair
Spotless after cleaning
Removable toy bar
Incredibly sturdy
Front wheels may get stuck
Lots of pieces for assembly
We’re shocked the Ingenuity Beanstalk didn’t drop a mic after how clean it was following a throwdown with avocado, tomato sauce, milk, and more. The unisex design of the high chair is functional yet simple enough, so it won’t clash with your home decor. It features six conversions your child can use for many years, growing from an infant seat to a full-size high chair, infant dining chair, and infant and toddler booster chair. The sixth conversion allows you to use the infant seat for a new baby while big brother or sister uses the infant booster seat.
Unlike the Munchkin 360 Cloud, which we assembled in under 90 seconds, the Beanstalk took us longer—13 minutes. There are a lot of parts when you first start putting the high chair together, but there’s a method to the madness. For example, the company uses a lettering system for the pieces, so you only have to match piece A to another part with the same letter. The picture instructions could have been more precise, but they weren’t too shabby overall. Heads up, though: We needed one Philips head screwdriver to secure pieces.
We love how the Ingenuity Beanstalk feels incredibly steady and doesn’t wobble, even with a weight sitting inside. However, we wish the wide base of the high chair folded to create less of a footprint. Still, the chair stays firmly in place when you move it around or accidentally bump into it—as parents, pets, and siblings often do. Two front wheels allow you to pull the high chair closer to you or across the room, but we thought they didn’t function very well when we wheeled the chair across the lab. The roomy seat allows bottoms to wiggle comfortably, while an adjustable five-point safety harness securely holds them in. For additional comfort, the high chair offers a three-position recline—also possible in booster seat modes—and a two-position adjustable footrest, which you can use in toddler chair modes. Plus, a removable tray adjusts to three locking positions to accommodate growing babies. We recommend double-checking that it’s locked in place as it doesn’t make a clicking sound to let you know otherwise.
The machine-washable (and super soft) fabric of the high chair’s seat is a dream for parents and caregivers doing the dirty work. We were worried about a tomato sauce stain on the material, but the seat pad came out beautifully clean and intact from the lab’s washing machine. In addition, the removable tray and tray insert are dishwasher-safe, and you can also toss the infant headrest and safety harness into the washing machine for extra cleaning.
One of our favorite bonus features of the Beanstalk is the removable toy bar with gentle vibrations (one C alkaline battery required and not included). Factor in the toy bar, six conversions, easy cleaning, and the $170 cost almost feels too good to be true (we’re happy it’s not!).

Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair
Durable and great quality wood
300-pound weight limit
Adjustable seat and footplates
Long assembly
Some add-ons are an additional cost
The Stokke Tripp Trapp is one of the most popular high chairs on the market—and we now know why. The high chair’s design is cooland trendy, despite first hitting the market over 50 years ago. With a 300-pound weight limit, it’s a chair you’ll use for a lifetime. We finished putting the Tripp Trapp together in approximately 50 minutes due to the lack of clarity in the picture-only instructions. While the company sends you the tools necessary for assembly, we thought the Allen wrench provided wasn’t as effective as ours in the lab. Otherwise, this is one solid high chair. We have zero doubts about the durability of its high-quality wood material after trying to (unsuccessfully) push it around the lab.
You can buy several versions and colors of the Stokke Tripp Trapp. For example, you can purchase the high chair alone, with an infant backrest and five-point safety harness, or with the backrest, seat cushion, safety harness, and Stokke tray. In addition, there’s an option to add the newborn bundle, which is the high chair with a large plush seat for babies to relax. Each Stokke high chair features an adjustable seat and foot plates to adapt to growing kiddos.
Despite the clean-looking design, some small cracks and crevices are hard to clean. We struggled to wipe it down with paper towels, so we recommend using a damp cloth. The five-point safety harness is machine-washable and looks brand new after one cycle, with no discoloration or food leftovers stuck in the buckle.
The Stokke Tripp Trapp without any extras is $269; however, expect to pay up to $399 if you want the seat with a safety harness, cushion, and food tray. While the complete set can get pricey, you’re paying for a chair your family can use for a lifetime. There’s even the option to customize the chair with your child’s name on it—for free—using up to 14 characters.

Best Tripp Trapp Alternative
Abiie Beyond Junior Y High Chair
Waterproof foam seat and back cover
Adjustable seat and footrest heights
三年制造商保修
Clip on removable tray broke off
Difficult crevices to clean
You’re not seeing double—the Abiie Beyond Junior Y High Chair boasts a similar design to the Stokke Tripp Trapp. The seat and footrest adjust to different height levels to accommodate kids of any size, and there’s a waterproof foam cover for added comfort on tiny tushes and backs. However, the high chair’s assembly is difficult, from unclear instructions to needing extra hands to hold pieces in place. In addition, it’s important to note that the seat and footrest must click in or they will fall out. Otherwise, the whole construction felt sturdy and didn’t creak or wobble when we moved it.
One of the best things about this high chair is its small footprint. However, while it doesn’t take up much space, the seat is narrow and the chair is short. The chair holds up to 200 pounds, but we’re unsure how comfortable the seat would be for adults or taller parents and caregivers. Still, we appreciate how easily the tray pops in and out for cleaning—almost too easily. Unfortunately, one of the clips on the plastic tray broke off when we removed it from the base. Thankfully, the Abiie Beyond Junior Y High Chair has a three-year manufacturer warranty, so replacements are a piece of cake.
The foam seat covers and the removable tray are easy to wipe down or wash in the sink. Similar to the Stokke Tripp Trapp, the slats where the seat and footrest adjust can accumulate food and are a challenge to clean. Despite some obvious downfalls with this pick, we still consider it an affordable alternative to the Tripp Trapp. You don’t have to pay extra for the seat rest, foam cushion, or tray because it’s all included in your purchase.

- 4.5 to 4.7 stars: These high chairs are excellent—they might have minor flaws, but we still recommend them.
- 4.0 to 4.5 stars: We think these are great high chairs, but others are better.
- 3.5 to 3.9 stars: These high chairs are just average.
- 3.4 and below: We don't recommend high chairs with this rating; you won't find any on our list.
High Chairs We Also Tested
- Joovy Nook NB High Chair: The fast assembly, one-handed swing open tray, and a recline option were some of our favorite features of the Joovy Nook NB High Chair. Its downfall was the staining on the non-removable and non-machine-washable straps, which stayed red from tomato sauce.
- Baby Jogger City Bistro: We love how easy this chair is to assemble and its foldable design for convenient storage. However, the chair’s fabric and frame stained during our test and were a pain to clean.
- Lalo The Chair: The modern, chic design of the Lalo high chair and its straightforward assembly were a breath of fresh air. On the other hand, it didn’t feel stable, and the conversion options were an additional cost.
How We Tested High Chairs
Thirteen parenting editors evaluated 32 high chairs at theVerywell Testing Labin New York City for two (intense) days. We assessed each high chair on several attributes: ease of assembly, design, ease of use, durability, stability, ease of cleaning, and overall value. We also spoke withBenjamin Hoffman, MD, CPST-I, FAAP, a professor of pediatrics at the Oregon Health & Science University, AAP president elect, and chair of the AAP Council on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention, for guidance on how to test high chairs and high chair safety. Moreover, we referred to the AAP,the CDC,and the CPSCfor high chair safety tips and guidelines.
On day one, we unboxed the high chairs and removed all parts and pieces to assemble them. We set a timer to determine how fast or long it took us to assemble the high chairs according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once assembled, we placed the high chairs on even ground and put a 25-pound sandbag inside to replicate the weight of a child. We noted if the straps kept the sandbags from falling forward, whether the straps fastened securely, and if there was too much slack that would allow a child to wiggle out. Additionally, we observed if the bases were stable. For high chairs with wheels, we wanted to know if the wheels lock and how difficult the mechanism is to use. Finally, we used moderate force to try and rock the high chairs forward, backward, and side-to-side to gauge their stability.
After the stability test, we got down and dirty by splashing and pouring food and drinks onto each high chair. For example, we poured a child’s cup of milk onto the seats while smearing sweet potato and spilling tomato sauce onto the trays and chairs. We also smashed avocados into the trays and seats and finished by crushing puffs into crumbs and sprinkling them on the high chairs. We used a timer again to see how long the cleaning would take us with wipes and paper towels. We noted whether seat cushions and harnesses were machine washable, if food trays were removable and dishwasher-safe, and if any food stayed behind after wiping the high chairs. We performed this test a second time, leaving the high chairs to sit overnight instead of cleaning them immediately.
On day two, we rewashed everything by throwing seat cushions and harnesses (when applicable) into the lab’s washing machine and trays into the dishwasher. We made notes of how easily we could remove the trays from the frame and if they fit into the dishwasher (or didn’t). We checked for leftover stains, whether any fabric shrunk, and if pieces, like zippers, broke off.
Following our initial testing, we sent off our favorites for families to use at home with their kiddos for six months and evaluate the same attributes we tested in the lab. To ensure we’re recommending the best high chairs, we continue to use the chairs with children in their daily lives. We will update our list with current information on how the chairs hold up over the next six months and beyond.
What to Look for When Buying a High Chair
Safety
High chairs feature a three- or five-point safety harness to keep children secure during mealtimes. Buckling them in for each meal (or snack) ensures they stay seated and lessens the risk of tipping the high chair over. According to Dr. Hoffman, the most significant risk with high chairs is falling, and parents and caregivers need to use the high chair as the manufacturer directs. Use the safety harnesses, including the crotch strap, to prevent your child from slipping down, which may result in serious injury or death.此外,永远不要让你的孩子忍受我n their high chair.
In addition to using high chair straps, ensure the high chair sits on even flooring, so there’s no tip-over risk, Dr. Hoffman advises. A freestanding high chair is better than one that hooks onto a table. A table has to be heavy enough to support a freestanding chair, and a child can dislodge the seat if they push against the table with their feet.
Check the manufacturer’s age and weight limits for a high chair to ensure the safest use. Some children are too young to sit in a high chair, while others may exceed the weight limit. These age and weight recommendations give you an idea of what the high chair can handle, and using them outside of the limits may result in serious injury.
Additionally, never leave a child unsupervised and keep a watchful eye. If they’re close enough to a table or chair, they may push themselves off those objects and tip the high chair over.
Readiness
“It’s important to make sure that kids are not being put in high chairs before they’re ready or before they can sit up independently,” says Dr. Hoffman. While each child develops at their own pace, there are several signs of readiness forsolid foodsyou can look for. For example, you’ll want to ensure that your child can sit in a high chair with good head control and trunk support for eating. According to Dr. Hoffman, the average timespan of this exciting milestone is between 4 to 6 months old, with 4 months being the absolute minimum.
Another sign of solid food readiness is the eagerness to reach for your food or watch you eat. Don’t be surprised if your little one tries to steal your slice of pizza at the dinner table one night. Additionally, a child should be able to move food from a spoon and swallow instead of pushing it out of their mouth. If the food dribbles onto their chin, wait a week or two and try again.
Lastly, babies may begin eating solid foods when they double their birth weight (at around 4 months) and weigh at least 13 pounds or more, according to the AAP.然而,认为这和其他读入的迹象s to guarantee your child is ready for a high chair. Remember: There’s no rush to start solids—make it an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone involved.
Ease of Cleaning
用餐时间应该be fun, which means they can often get messy. Look for a high chair that’s easy to clean, so you don’t have to spend too much time cleaning up after each meal or snack. While it’s best to check the manufacturer’s recommendations, many high chairs (like theIngenuity Beanstalk) feature machine-washable seat covers and dishwasher-safe trays. In addition, you can often wipe the frame with the proper cleaning supplies (check the high chair’s manual first) and toss other pieces into their designated machines for quick cleaning.
Design
A high chair will be a prominent piece of furniture in your kitchen or dining room, so be sure to check how much space you have for it. For example, if you’re working with a smaller room, opt for a foldable high chair to store it when not in use. Regardless of the size of your space, the high chair should fit comfortably at the table, and your kiddo should enjoy sitting in it. Dr. Hoffman recommends listening and watching to see if they’re unhappy or content.
If you want to extend the life of a high chair, check for one with conversions, like theGraco Table2Table, which transforms from a high chair to a toddler chair and table. Some high chairs feature other conversions, such as an infant booster seat or toddler chair. Some high chair conversions even allow you to use the chair with one child or two, extending their life and saving you money instead of forcing you to buy multiple seating arrangements.
Another factor to consider is where you'll be taking the chair. If you plan on using it during trips and vacations, check out high chairs that are easy to clean and fold for traveling purposes, such as thePeg Perego Siesta.
